  • In 1972, President Nixon commissioned a report on, as it was then called, marihuana. Nixon wanted intellectual cover for his war on pot-smoking hippies. Unfortunately for Nixon, the report came back with the recommendation that pot be legalized. NORML now marks the 35th anniversary of the federal government’s marijuana junk science.

  • The fact that one of the two leading proponents of “libertarian paternalism” thinks increasing paycheck withholding would be a swell idea really only drives home the point that neither of the two scholars pushing the cute phrase “libertarian paternalism” (Cass Sunstein and Richard Thaler) are actually libertarian.
  • An ongoing problem: Parolees being sent back to prison despite not being convicted of an actual crime. I realize most people don’t naturally sympathize with parolees. But if a parolee can be sent back to prison despite not actually having done anything wrong, what’s the point in even having parole?
