My New Coffee Roaster Smoker

Sunday, October 15th, 2006

So last week, a cameraman and producer from HG TV came to our house. My girlfriend entered us to try out a product for the I Want That! series, where they give you some fun new gadget, you try it out for a week or so, then they come film you playing with it. Our gadget was a coffee roaster. We got some green coffee beans from Counter Culture Coffee, and over the last two weeks or so have been fiddling with how to cook them up. It doesn’t smell nearly as good as you’d think. It actually smells a little like burning. But the whole process only takes about ten minutes. And freshly-roasted coffee is pretty darned delicious.

So last week the TV crew came to our house last week to film, and we threw a little roasting party. My only observation: Reality TV isn’t very realistic. Most of what they filmed was staged. And they were here for a good three hours for what I understand will be at most a two-minute segment. But we do get to keep the roaster, which is pretty cool. They also gave us a pretty nice French press.

After the film crew left, however, our house nearly burned to the ground. I’ll let Jacob Grier explain how. But yes. That’s my house behind the smoke in those photos.
