D’Souza Appeasement Watch

Sunday, October 15th, 2006

A few weeks ago, I lamented a forthcoming book from Dinesh D’Souza that apparently blames the “cultural left” for 9/11,taking the “they hate us for our freedom” argument to absurd, anti-American, patently offensive heights. But I was only going by the jacket copy and the publisher’s book page. The galleys hadn’t yet been sent out for review.

Well, now they have. James Wolcott got one, and finds that the book itself is every bit as thick-headed, fascist, and bilious as advertised. The idiot seems to be suggesting America make itself more like the Taliban, so as not to offend our fundamentalist Islamic critics.

I didn’t agree with all of it, but D’Souza’s past work suggests he’s quite a bit smarter than this, if at times overly polemical. Sad that he’s opted for the Malkin-Coulter path to the quick buck. Also, how the hell does a place like Hoover let this slide? Is this really serious research?

I think it’ll backfire. At least I hope it does. You have to hope that intellectualy honest conservatives will find it in themselves to give this book the thorough lashing it deserves. Or better yet, ignore it completely.
