With Enemies Like These…

A few random thoughts on the Webb-Allen campaign:

  • I saw a web stream of the Meet the Press debate, and thought Webb did very well. It’s pretty sad when the Allen campaign’s only criticisms of the guy are that (a) he opposed a war that 65 percent of America now agrees was wrong, (b) he wrote a sexist article 27 years ago (funny, given Allen’s own history), and (c) Webb used video of President Reagan praising him in a campaign commercial. It’s also amusing to watch the conservative right slamming a political opponent for “thinking that women ought to stay in the kitchen,” to paraphrase more than a few Allen supporters.
  • Webb is by far the more libertarian of the two candidates. Allen’s support for tax cuts is about the only libertarian position he has left. Webb’s a libertarian on most social issues, on foreign policy, and on several civil liberties vs. war on terror issues. Webb’s also an intellectual, Allen’s a lightweight reactionary.
  • In this campaign we also have yet another example of a Republican who never served in the military accusing a war hero Democrat of being soft on national defense It’s almost comical how often this happens.
  • The Washington Times reports that Allen’s supporters say his backing a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage along with a ballot initiative in Virginia adding a ban on gay marriage to the state constitution may be enough for the incumbent senator to eek out a victory. Swell. This is what has become of the GOP. It’s best hopes for clinging to power now rest with intrusive, last-minute legislation banning private behavior, a flag burning amendment, and largely symbolic ballot measures (Virginia already has two laws outlawing same-sex marriage) designed to do little more than express popular contempt for gay people. How proud Republicans must be.
  • Dean Barnett had the integrity to suggest that Webb won the Meet the Press debate over at Hugh Hewitt’s blog (Barnet still supports Allen for reelection). The reaction?
vote in Virginia, and all I need to know about Jim Webb is that he’s a Democrat.

I will never vote for anyone irresponsible, disloyal and stupid enough to be a member of the vile Democrat Party.

Can’t wait to vote against Webb on November 7th. Allen may not be the best candidate but he doesn’t have to be - he is not a Democrat.

If he is such a remarkable man with many virtues and a passion for defending his country, why has he aligned himself with a party that scorns values, promotes pacifism, and often acts against the best interest of their country? At best, his judgement is called into question and at worst the sincerity of his spoken beliefs.

I am very disappointed in your effort today and fervently hope that you can clarify your statements and regain a measure of credibility with a former fan of yours.

Webb served in the military. Wow, now what?
Oh, he served in the military in the only war we lost. Loser

Fact, Webb criticized Clinton in harsh terms, then years later has Clinton campagin for him.
    Hypocrite. Webb can’t be trusted.

How can Webb be a member of a party that would smile if his son came home in a coffin?
How can Webb be a member of a party that roots for the would be killers of his son?

Webb is a sleazy sell out. The less like him in congress the better.

What this Virginia voter saw was a lot of boilerplate party spin and talking points regurgitated by Webb. And what’s the deal with that hairdo? If it wasn’t a rug, it sure did sit on top of his head funny. I don’t recall there being any gray, either. I’m not all up to speed on Webb’s history - I know there are those who say he served with honor and distinction in the military and government but, the talking points blather and the ‘do left me with a distinct impression of phoneyness.

Should be a fun six weeks.
