We’re Losing

Sunday, September 10th, 2006

Two pieces on the editorial pages of today’s NY Times neatly exemplify how we libertarians have lost both the left and the right, even on the issues where we ought to naturally be alligned.

From the left, the liberal Times editorial board embraces the terrorism hype, ignores common sense, and calls for a ban on all carry-on luggage.

From the right, Times columnist David Brooks buys into the wage stagnation hype and calls for a massive series of new government initiatives, including universal preschool, and asking taxpayers to give $1,000 to American citizen at birth. He calls supporters for his recommendations “progressive conservatives and conservative progressives.”

The left is giving up on civil liberties. The right’s giving up on the free market.

Estonia’s looking better all the time.
