Art of the Smear

Wednesday, August 30th, 2006

People for the American Way has put out a loathesome press release attempting to smear the Institute for Justice’s Clint Bolick. The smear fails, miserably, becasue anyone vaguely familiar with Bolick or his career knows that the guy is one of the most genuine, compassionate, opend-minded people you’ll meet. I’d guess that the scads of minority business owners Bolick and IJ have freed from onerous licensure regulations and state-sanctioned oligopolies might have a thing or two to say to PFAW, as well.

Reads like a weak attempt to go ad hominem from a group that’s clearly losing the debate. Lame.

On the other hand, The Nation’s smear of Sen. George Allen strikes me as the real deal. I don’t know Allen, so I don’t know if he’s a racist. But the guy certainly doesn’t seem to mind if the right type of voter happens to think he is. From the lynchin’ noose he used to display in his office to the odd reverence for the confederacy held by a guy born and raised in Southern California, to the recent, weird “macaca” mess, Allen’s certainly seems to have a habit of setting his foot down in the occasonal pile of warm racial poo.

The Council of Conservative Citizens is an openly and unapologetically racist organization. There’s no getting around it. And after the dustup that ensued after several other high-profile politicians got caught entangling themselves with the group, Allen’s spokesman’s statement that he’s never heard of the CCC is laughable.
