Webb Wins
Wednesday, June 14th, 2006A “Regan Democrat” knocking off a longtime party operative in the primary I think can only be good for Virginia politics. Webb’s main issue is opposition to the war in Iraq. Which means there may finally be some genuine resentment among the working class for this war, resentment that’s showing up at the ballot box.
I would think Webb would have an excellent chance at defeating George Allen in November — a guy I’d put second only to Rick Santorum and Ted Stevens on my list of GOP senators who oughta be fired. An Allen loss in November would also likely derail his presidential aspirations. That would be good for the GOP. And for…well…frankly…humanity.
Webb’s a populist, and populists tend to demagogue on economic issues. But the senate more members willing to call both parties on their bullshit. Someone with some gall. Webb seems to have that.
Like most politicians, he’ll probably disappoint. But on the face of it, he seems to me to be vastly preferable to Harris Miller — a lobbyist and Democrat insider, or Allen, a fundy Bush apologist who apparently collects lynchin’ nooses.
