Podcasting Question

Tuesday, April 18th, 2006

Anyone know the law with respect to using copyrighted music on a podcast? Does it matter if you’re using an entire song, or a short clip (say, under 30 seconds)? Does it matter if the podcast is free and without any kind of advertising?

My guess is that RIAA would say “no” to all the above, and forbid its catalog for any kind of podcast use. Which is stupid of them. But whatever. If that’s the case, does anyone know if there’s any kind of license a lowly, small-time podcaster can purchase that would allow the use of copyrighted music? Seems ridiculous to charge podcasters the same thing you’d charge a radio station.

But then, much what the RIAA does is pretty ridiculous.
