Militarizing Mayberry

Thursday, March 2nd, 2006

Darien, Connecticut (population 20,508) has its own SWAT team, and has for 20 years. In 2004, the town had no murders, no rapes, two robberies, and one aggravated assault.

Note the quote from the officer who says all the cops want to be on the SWAT team because “that’s where all the action is.” Another says “the best part” is being “in the middle of the incident.”

Don’t SWAT supporters say the value of tactical units is to minimize confrontation? Anyone see a conflict between that purported goal and a team of guys who joined because they love “the action?”
