DWI Checkpoints
Tuesday, February 21st, 2006Police in my home city of Alexandria stopped 888 cars one night last week at a DWI checkpoint. Though they nailed several people for various driving violations, they didn’t net a single drunk driving arrest.
The word is out about the checkpoints though, and after several hours, and 888 cars, there wasn’t one drunk driver arrested.“It’s not unusual that we don’t have any DWI arrests,” said public information officer Rich Perez. “Word of mouth about the checkpoints helps.”
Helps with what? Cutting down on drunk driving, or needlessly harassing innocent motorists that “word of mouth” tells drunks to take another route home?
