Protectionism

It ain’t just catfish…

1) Maryland may soon stop fining business for selling gas at prices lawmakers consider “too low.” Lawmakers are considering revoking the law, which was basically a sop to gast stations at the expense of wholesaler retailers (and consuemrs). I suppose we should consider this a positive development for economic liberty, though sorta’ in the same way one might consider the government not deciding to punch every random third person in the stomach is “a positive development for individual rights.”

2) Micro-level protectionism:

In an effort to broaden the Pedestrian Mall’s palate, the city will add a sixth food vendor, but the decision is cooking up mixed feelings among local food sellers.

George Mihalopoulos, the owner of George’s Best Gyros, is perplexed by the idea.

“I don’t know why they would want to add another,” he said. “Five is enough.”

The vendor and rental-property manager, who has served the Greek dish on the Ped Mall since 1984, said he hasn’t yet voiced his concerns to the city, but he would tell officials there are enough carts coming and going through the area.

Thanks to Bronywn Ramey for the tip.

We’ve looked at similar shenanigans when it comes to your shrimp and your tomatoes.
