Endangered Speech

Monday, November 28th, 2005

George Will has an exceptional column in this week’s Newsweek that you oughtta’ read all the way through. He runs through a series of astonishingly awful campaign finaince proposals in several states, as well as clear, concise analysis of federal regs. Snippetry:

Some liberal senators have filed a brief urging the Supreme Court, in a case concerning Vermont’s speech restrictions, to affirm that people like the seven senators–”elected representatives and seasoned participants in the electoral process,” meaning professional politicians–”are entitled to broad deference in the regulation of federal elections.”

“Seasoned participants in the electoral process?” Holy hubris.

What they really mean: Courts should let career politicians gerrymander, put caps on political spending, and otherwise rig the system to ensure that they face minimal competition come Election Day.
