The Soft Bigotry of Low Expectations

Saturday, November 26th, 2005

In Indiana, it’s pretty common (and a little twisted) for parents to hold their boys back a year to give them a competitive advantage in basketball. I also knew parents growing up who moved from school district to school district, looking for the right mix of a team with a competitive basketball team, but not too competitive, so their kid could still have the opportunity to be a star.

For some odd reason, that came to mind when I saw this story. Seems that white parents are moving their kids from great schools to so-so schools. Why? Because the great schools are too academically competitive (spun — probably accurately — by the Wall Street Journal as “too Asian.”). So parents are willing to trade an inferior education for higher class rank.
