Greenfield Welcomes You!
Monday, October 17th, 2005Speaking of Big Lots, here’s a quick, funny story: When I was in college, the Big Lots on State Road 9 was one of the first signs you saw when coming into Greenfield off of Interstate 70. I think it was sophomore year, I was driving a friend home from college who wasn’t from the area. I had already explained to her the unfortunate backward reputation Hancock County has when it comes to…um…people who aren’t white. Not the worst county in the state. But certainly a rather embarassing characteristic to have to concede about one’s hometown.
At any rate, it was dark when we pulled off the interstate, and as we entered Greenfield, the “L” had burned out of the big neon “Big Lots” sign. Meaning the first thing we and every other motorist saw that night upon entering Greenfield was an enormous neon sign that read “Bigots!”
