Have a Terrible Idea? Win $100,000!

Monday, October 10th, 2005

Via Jujitsui Generis, check out this contest sponsored by the Service Employees International Union. In 175 words or less, submit your best “cutting-edge idea on how to help America’s workers and our economy thrive in the 21st Century.” Grand prize is $100,000.

Judges will be looking for ideas and proposals that “Grow the economy; Create good-paying jobs that allow people to raise a family, afford health insurance, pay for their children’s college education, get additional training and save for retirement; [and] Encourage existing companies to expand and entrepreneurs to start new ones.” So simple.

So far, the entries are indeed inspiring if you believe in charging the government with fixing all current and future woes. How about voluntarily paying more in taxes to reduce the national debt? Give tax breaks to people who vote. And Sue W. in Michigan believes that “new buildings should not be built until all empty buildings have been utilized.”

Although I do like this one about having a “none of the above” option on voting ballots…

Yeesh. If you can hold back the bile long enough to come up with another proposal that involves having the government pay for even more stuff than it already does, send in your idea. You might just win $100,000, which you could then spend on goods made in non-unionized Third World countries.
