  • Congrats to Agitator.com guest blogger Baylen Linnekin, whose decision to (almost) take up smoking out of spite for the D.C. smoking ban was quoted in today’s Washington Post Express (a condensed, tabloid version of the Washington Post for news consumers with short attention spans).
  • Josh London, an old chum of mine, has written his first book, a history of the U.S. Navy’s war with the Barbary Pirates. Josh and I once wrote a parody advice column for a fledgling Internet ‘zine. The column was called, “Radley, the Jew & You.” His book seems a bit more erudite.
  • HBO: I’m still up in the air on Rome. I haven’t missed an episode yet, so I guess that’s something. I guess if it weren’t for all the other great stuff on HBO, I’d probaby think Rome was genius. More Sunday night: The season premiere of Curb Your Enthusiasm was a little disappointing. Extras, on the other hand, is hysterical. Ricky Gervais is brilliant. And kudos to Kate Winslet portraying herself as such an awful human being in the name of comedy. Hope there are more cameos like hers.
  • Also undecided about the latest from Black Rebel Motrocycle Club, Howl. It’s such a stark departure from their first two albums. Stripped down, with blues, folk and gospel influences. Gone are those enormous walls of fuzzy guitar that made the band my favorite music to drive fast to. Howl is most certainly different. I haven’t quite figured out if they actually pull it off. It’ll take a few more listens.
