Friday, September 23rd, 2005Here’s a sad, typical story of a local bean manufacturer who’s getting eminent domained so the millionaire Irsays can get a taxpayer-funded stadium for their Colts football team. The guy has offered serveral reasonable-sounding alternatives and compromises to out and out losing his livelihood, but the Indiana Stadium and Convention Center Building Authority won’t take anything less than everything he has, and at a discount.
Note that they only have to pay fair market value for the land. They don’t have to pay what it’ll cost him to rebuild his factory elsewhere. They’re effectively destroying his ability to make a living so that millionaire owners can give corporate executives a place to park their cars while attending football games people of average income can’t afford to attend. Assholes.
Background on the Colts stadium fiasco here.
