Christopher, You’re Dead to Me

Friday, September 16th, 2005

Christopher Hitchens was once considered such an “insightful, provocative, and impossible-to-ignore critic of American politics and culture” that he scored an interview in Reason. At the time, he seemed to be inching towards sanity. Then we decided to invade Iraq, and his obsessive support of the war turned (to me) what seemed like blemishes to warts and then festering goiters. And the fact that such an intelligent man still gleefully labels himself a Marxist (even if you don’t ask), or that he continues to lead the Iraq-war symphony even as that ship goes down by yards each day, and that he is utterly (apologies to Chuck Klosterman) wolfshit crazy, means his once-certain relevance has officially evaporated.

For those who disagree with this assessment, Hitchens’s latest rambling performance may seal the deal.
