Coming to Your Conservative Senses

Thursday, September 15th, 2005

Tom Delay’s patently absurd assertion yesterday that there’s nothing left to cut out of the federal budget may have opened some conservatives’ eyes. File John Podhoretz’s paragraph below under “No shit, Sherlock”:

PERHAPS TODAY’S ASTOUNDING DELAY QUOTE…about how there’s no way to cut the federal budget will offer a useful reminder to conservatives that while they may be aligned with Republican Congressional politicians, Republican Congressional politicians are just that — politicians first. There is too often a rush on to defend any and every GOP pol by conservative bloggers and e-mailers on the grounds that if they’re being attacked by the MSM, they’re victims of injustice. Sometimes, though, they’re just…indefensible.

It’s so cute to witness a partisan hack’s utter naivetÃ?© about his partisan hackery. “Hey, maybe power-hungry Republicans aren’t committed to the ideals of Goldwater and Reagan! Could it be?”

Now if we could just get JPod and his ilk to take that nugget of wisdom and apply it to other political hot potatoes—like, perhaps, maybe, just a little bit…The war in Iraq? The federal marriage amendment? The monstrous Medicare drug benefit? Abu Ghraib?

BUELLER?
