Grim report from a doctor at Louis Armstrong airport in the early days after Katrina.
While people were still waiting to be rescued, Louisiana Congressman William Jefferson — already under investigation for corruption — had the National Guard escort him to his home so he could remove his belongings. They waited for more than hour while he collected valuables. When the National Guard truck got stuck, a helicopter in the process of rescuing people was diverted to Jefferson’s home. The helicopter waited for 45 minutes before Jefferson waived it off. It ran out of fuel and had to abort its mission.
On a lighter note, McSweeney’s ponders what “The Aristocrats” joke might sound like if told by Bob Newhart.
