Scott McClellan took a beating yesterday at the White House press briefing. Good.

I found the following exchange interesting. Remember, the context here is emergency preparedness:

Q: Is he confidentthat he can secure the American people in the event of a major terrorist attack?

McClellan: We are securing the American people by staying on the offensive abroad and working to spread freedom and democracy in the Middle East.

Now I understand if the White House believes the war in Iraq will ultimately secure our safety. I don’t agree, but I understand the point. But this briefing was about emergency preparedness. What we’d do if there were another terrorist attack on U.S. soil. What first response systems we’d have in place. And McClellan’s first response is that we’re securing safety at home by bringing democracy to the Middle East?

Speaks volumes about this administration’s priorities.
