  • Rush Limbaugh slams Slate media critic Jack Shafer as part of the “liberal media.” Shafer of course is a libertarian. Not a liberal. Probably the least liberal writer at Slate. Which of course gave his criticism of the media for not including the class and race of those left behind in New Orleans a bit more heft. Nuance is lost on bombastic talk radio. Easier to marginalize the critic than address the criticism.
  • Despite writing several columns critical of the Drug War, and one more critical of GOP environmental policy, the left too would rather marginalize NY Times columnist John Tierney as a White House lackey than actually engage the arguments he makes. I’ve noted in the past how every Tierney drug war column gets met on leftist blogs with asinine dismissals like “he’s only writing this stuff to save his buddy Rush Limbaugh.” Now comes Atrios, who’s been slamming Tierney since he started the Times gig. Atrios nails Tierney in this post for comments he made at the Institute for World Politics, calling him a “red-baiting chickenhawk.” One problem — the guy who spoke at the Institute for World Politics was a different John Tierney. Atrios posted a correction. In his comments section. About twenty comments deep. And it isn’t there anymore.

Seems like the kind of mistake and lack of correction for which a right-winger might earn the Atrios “wanker of the day” award.

  • Jesse Jackson:
Jackson questioned why Bush has not named blacks to top positions in the federal response to the disaster, particularly when the majority of victims remaining stranded in New Orleans are black: “How can blacks be locked out of the leadership, and trapped in the suffering?”

“It is that lack of sensitivity and compassion that represents a kind of incompetence.”

    Next paragraph:

U.S. Army Lt. Gen. Russell Honore, head of the military task force overseeing operations in the three states, is black. His task force is providing search and rescue, medical help and sending supplies to the three states in support of the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

    Not that it should matter.

Can anyone at the AP read? If so – do they do it prior to publishing their articles? Examine the three paragraphs below from an article about Jesse Jackson’s reaction to Katrina aid: Jackson questioned why Bush has not named
