Pastafarians
Monday, August 29th, 2005The Washington Post’s Sally Jenkins — possibly the worst major daily sports columnist writing today — writes the most bizarre sports opinion piece I’ve seen in a very long time. And sports columns can be awful.
I’ve noted before how desperate sports writers can sometimes jump from sports into real issues with real consequences — and the catastrophic effects such endeavors often have on logic, interesting writing, and intellgient debate. This Jenkins thing is the most damning evidence to date. You’ll have to read it to believe it. I’ll give you a hint: It involves sports and the evolution-intelligent design debate.
Just for shits and giggles, I’ll give you an excerpt:
And try telling a baseball fan that pure Darwinism explains Joe DiMaggio. As Tommy Lasorda once said, “If you said to God, ‘Create someone who was what a baseball player should be,’ God would have created Joe DiMaggio — and he did.”
The rest of the column is that funny.
I’d suggest that Jenkins stick to writing about sports, and only sports. But she tends to embarrass herself there, too.
