Thomas Jefferson and Santorum

Tuesday, August 2nd, 2005

No, this post isn’t some lurid description of a Sally Hemmings encounter.

Rather, it’s about the Pennsylvania Senator’s rather contemptuous treatment of the Declaration of Independence.

Rick Santorum says that the “liberal” view of freedom is “not the kind of freedom our founders envisioned.” Elaborating, he says “It is an entire culture that focus (sic) on immediate gratification and the pursuit of happiness and personal pleasure. And it is harming America.”

Given the rakish tendencies of both Jefferson and Ben Franklin, and that George Washington grew hemp (as did Jefferson) and distilled his own whiskey, I’d wager that had he been alive at the time, Santorum would have scolded the Founding Fathers themselves for pursuing a freedom that’s “not the kind of freedom our founders envisioned.”
