Several weeks ago, I directed you to a story about Susan Torres. She’s the woman laying brain-dead as cancer continues to ravage her body. Her family, however, has asked docors to keep her alive long enough for the fetus inside of her to have a good shot at survival. When I first linked to the story, I added a comment about how it’d be nice to see the pro-life folks rally to her cause. Here was a case where believers could demonstrate an exercise in civil society, in stark contrast to the Terry Schiavo fiasco, which degenerated into political society at its worst.

It’s nice to report that they did. So far, the family has received over $400,000 in donations.

More importantly, Torres is in her 26th week of pregnancy. Even if delivered today, the little girl inside of her would have a fighting chance to live. Doctors are hoping she can hang on for just a couple more weeks, and that the cancer stays confined to the mother, and doesn’t begin to attack the baby as well.
