A Fool’s Bargain
Saturday, July 9th, 2005President Bush apparently capitulated to Tony Blair’s plan to double aid to Africa out of “solidarity” between us and Britian in the war on terror. I understand the temptation to not leave a guy whose country was just attacked holding the bag, particularly one who’s stood by us under similar circumstances, but making policy based on emotion is a particularly inept way to govern.
The net result: In exchange for Blair’s help selling and supporting a misguided, poorly planned war that promises to drag on for years, we pledge not only to continue a government-to-government aid program that has kept Africa in poverty and turmoil, we’ve now pledged to actually double our commitment to it.
Looks like everybody wins, doesn’t it?
