From Stevens’ opinion:

“Our cases have taught us that there are some unscrupulous physicians who overprescribe when it is sufficiently profitable to do so,” he said.

By who’s measure? The DEA’s? Who’s better equipped do determine what is and isn’t appropriate: physicians, or cops and politicians? And do we ban all access to the drug for all people because some physicians might abuse the system?

Further, even assuming Stevens is correct, are we really ready to condemn sick people to agony, or even death, in order to prevent “some unscrupulous” physicians from profiting off of medical marijuana? What kind of priorities are those? I think the point holds with any drug, but it’s particularly apt when we’re talking about marijuana, a drug for which there are zero recorded incidents of death by overdose.
