South Bend, Indiana:

A federal jury in South Bend convicted a Gary doctor Friday afternoon of engaging in prescription drug abuse.

Jurors deliberated about five hours before finding Dr. Jong Bek, 63, guilty of more than 26 felony counts of conspiracy and abetting the illegal dispensing of controlled substances by writing hundreds of prescriptions for commonly abused drugs to addicts.

That’s less than 12 minutes of deliberation per charge. Dr. Frank Fisher writes:

I spent over 100 hours reviewing dozens of his medical files and watching undercover videotapes of his practice. The man is a caring and dedicated physician who ministered to the most difficult of populations, the working poor. On Wednesday, I testified on his behalf.

Another doctor in Florida is likely to be convicted next week.
