It’s Not About Revenue
Wednesday, May 25th, 2005Washington, D.C. has collected $136 million in fines from traffic cameras since 1999, or $242 for every man, woman, and child who lives in the District. Consequently, the city is adding more. It will double the number of speed cameras as well as add red-light cameras.
The city will also reneg on its promise to only pay ACS, the company that runs the cameras, a flat fee for the service. The city came under fire a couple of years ago when the contract it negotiated with ACS was on a per-ticket basis. So the city went to a flat fee.
But the cameras have proven lucrative. So now, ACS gets both a flat fee, plus bonuses for every 2,500 tickets above about 54,000 its cameras are able to issue.
