Seattle’s Public Market
Sunday, May 15th, 2005As promised, a little photo essay from Seattle’s public market on Pike Street. It’s one of my favorite places. Jumbo, meaty seafood right off the boat stocked in ice chips. The most perfectly-shaped and -colored fruit and vegetables I’ve ever seen. Vivid, vibrant flowers (that are also ridiculously cheap). And lots of vendors, street performers, and no-frills, delicious food-on-the-fly type restaurants. I took the picture below at about 6am. Click “more” for the others.

Here’s the market during the day. “Bustling” is a word that comes to mind.

Here’s the same shot early on a Saturday morning, before the fish come in.

Stocking salmon.

Salmon stocked.
Vegetables…

…fruit.

Lobster tails the size of basset hounds. Okay, not really. But they were enormous. Scallops like golf balls. Prawns big as a baby’s arm.

The world’s first Starbucks. I was surprised at how understated it is. It’s probably the sparest Starbucks I’ve ever visited. No comfy chairs. Just some stools, lots of wood molding, and a couple plaques denoting its significance.

Tulips. You probably knew that.

These might be cranes. Or drills. I’m not sure.

Fresh red snapper.

Salmon. Salmon jerky. Smoked salmon. Salmon salad. Salmon stakes. Whole salmon. Salmon fillets.

Crabs. Bigger than your face.

Black & white shot of one of the gritty seafood restaurants along the water. Great breakfast. I had smoked salmon eggs benedict.

Same restaurant, different angle.
