Hazy Future for D.C. Property Rights

Tuesday, May 10th, 2005

The Washington City Paper runs a profile of D.C. City Council member Carol Schwartz’s efforts to kill another attempt at a smoking ban. The article emits mocking and admiration vibes at the same time.

Schwartz’s valiant efforts are probably for naught. The rest of the City Council seems set to sell out local independent businesses to satisfy out-of-state “public health” crusaders. Which means the tiny victory for liberty we earned a couple of years ago will be annihilated by Big Health.

Given that those same crusaders are looking to ban smoking in the car, in apartment complexes, and in private homes where children are present, why don’t we just drop the pretense and ban cigarettes altogether?

We could double the DEA’s budget and give it new extra-constitutional powers so that it will be adequately armed to erradicate the tobacco threat.
