Let the Mighty Eagle Swear

So on my way to Seattle, Alaska Air has this cool in-flight feature where you can rent a personal digital entertainment player. It comes pre-packed with several movies, TV shows, music videos, and such.

So I watched the movie Sidways. First, super movie. Though I didn’t get to see the last 15 percent of it.

Here’s the funny part: Though it was clearly marked “Rated R,” for some reason the version they offered us on the flight was censored. “Fucking,” for example, was overdubbed with “flipping.” Thomas Hayden Church at one point called Paul Giamatti a “flippin’ tuna fish,” which had me wondering what the original line was for a good ten minutes.

But each time one of the characters used the word “asshole,” the dub came out “Ashcroft.” The first time it happened, I thought I had misheard. But it then happened several more times over the course of the movie. I thought it was hillarious. Every asshole was made into an Ashcroft.

Turns out, I’m not the first to notice.
