Give a Little Bit

Wednesday, April 6th, 2005

Because of who’s in power, there are times these days when I feel a certain sense of comraderie with the left.

But it never lasts long. They always correct me.

Here’s my question whenever I hear a lefty wax romantic for a tax hike:

Do you pay more is absolutely required of you? Why not send a little extra this April 15? In fact, why not send a lot extra? And why not send a more than what’s required to state and local government, too? Matt may not want to pay in more than he needs to at the federal level, because he doesn’t like who will be spending it. But there’s no reason he couldn’t pay three, four, or five times his tax bill to Washington, D.C.

As far as I know, anyone who wants to can pay a little extra to help pay down the deficit. Or, if you’d rather, to boost sweet Big Government benevolence.

Certainly, the point holds more sway with wealthy lefties than with a young pundit like Matt. But Matt’s got a nice job. He gets an extra shot of income from Blogads. If Matt really believes what he writes — that government deserves more of our money — he might even make a few sacrifices.

I’m serious. Why not? I’m interested to see if these folks are as carefree with their own money as they are with mine.
