Drowning in the Carpool

A new study from the Texas Transportation Institute suggests that not only do HOV and carpool lanes not work, they may actually cause accidents. What’s more, the very incentive HOV lanes give for motorists to carpool — faster commute times — is what causes the accidents. The study finds that the general traffic lane closest to the HOV lane sees accident rates that are 153-188 percent higher than average.
