Vicarious Guilt
Wednesday, March 23rd, 2005In Canada, a tumble down the slippery slope:
A 25-year-old Edmonton woman has been charged in relation to a March 7th pedestrian hit and run, even though she wasn’t driving the vehicle.Edmonton police say the woman is being charged as the owner, not the driver, of the vehicle.
This is the same provision which allows police to issue photo radar and photo red light tickets to the owners of vehicles.
[...]
Charged, as the owner, for failing to remain at the scene of a collision and for failing to render assistance is 25-year-old Korylea Lebray of Edmonton. Police say additional charges are likely.
The facts of this case don’t make the owner look so good, either. Still, it’s a troubling expansion of an exception that began with parking tickets, and has since broadened to include red light and speed cameras.
