Op-Ed Diversity

Sunday, March 20th, 2005

Michael Kinsley today weights in on the diversity on the op-ed page argument, and makes some valid points.

One quibble, though. Kinsley’s column appears in the Los Angeles Times, where he’s an editor. The same column appears in the Washington Post. It sometimes appears at Slate. It also sometimes appears on the MSNBC website. That’s four slots of prime journalistic real estate where the same column appears.

This isn’t a criticism of Kinsley. Good for him. I’ve also written several times that I think he’s a brilliant writer.

But if op-ed editors really are looking for diversity, why does the same column by the same author regularly appear in four different places? That’s three valuable slots that could be available for other voices.
