Droopy Drawers Update

Sunday, March 20th, 2005

Virginia Republicans are now saying that they didn’t pass the “droopy drawers” bill because they actually agreed with it, but because they were with upset with how Virginia Democrats treated the sponsor of the bill, who’s a Democrat.

This is supposed to make us feel better? Virginia legislators are passing laws that we Virginians are expected follow not because they’re good policy, but to spite one another? What the hell?

Of course, immedatiely after saying the bill’s passage was really about poking at the Democrats, one Virginia Republican stil things it was a pretty good idea:

At the same time, Athey said he believed the bill was justified because, “Increasingly, as our society coarsens, you’re seeing the government have to step in and regulate things that were left before in the domain of the parents and churches.”

Well, no. You shouldn’t. The government isn’t a parent. And it isn’t a church. And “preventing coarsening” isn’t a function of legitimate government.
