Columbia, MO
Wednesday, March 2nd, 2005Benjamin Baeker has more on Missouri State Sen. Chuck Gross’s plan to ban all high school state athletic touraments from Columbia becuase of the city’s decision to let sick people smoke marijuana, and to downgrade the penalty for possession for everyone else.
The latest wrinkle in the case has a police organization shamelessly invoking the name of a cop slain in the line of duty to lobby the city to repeal the ordinance. The cop’s killer apparently had some marijuana in his car, though there’s no indication the drug played a role in the shooting.
The twisted part to this story is that recriminalizing marijuana in honor of the slain cop is the single best way to put more cops in danger. Nobody kills cops over legal drugs. Cops get killed over illegal drugs, which are far more lucrative, and worth the risk. Precisely because they’re illegal.
