A wink in the right direction…

President Bush’s plan to cut farm subsidies is welcome news and all, but you’ll have to pardon me if I share Atrios’s skepticism:

…I predict that the most likely result of this attempt to cut farm spending is precisely what happened in 2002 when Bush also proposed cutting farm subsidies. A bill will pass which significantly increases farm subsidies, at which point Bush will sign it and praise it.

I’m more than happy to be proven wrong on this one. But I suspect that farm state Republicans will throw tantrums and threaten something more near and dear to Bush’s heart than limiting federal spending — money for faith-based initiatives, say — and he’ll cave.

Call me cynical. But I’ve got four years of evidence coloring my cynicism.
