They’re coming for Big Kibble next
Monday, January 10th, 2005ESPN Outdoors reports on a British survey of physiotherapists finding that obesity is the number one health problem for dogs, ranking ahead of both traffic and disc problems.
Like humans, dogs become obese because they are overfed and do not exercise enough, the study observed.
“As a nation we overfeed at meal times and tend to give “titbits” through the day as treats for our furry friends,” said animal physiotherapist Charlotte Baldwyn. “Good health and fitness for the domestic pet is vital to a happy and long life.”
I’ve yet to hear proposals for dog biscuit taxes or bans on commercials aimed at impressionable puppies, but it may just be a matter of time. Fortunately, the market will provide for all sorts of innovative ways for dog owners to make sure their pets get plenty of, um, exercise.
