Wild Card Weekend Open Thread

Friday, January 7th, 2005

I’ve been a bad guest blogger, I know. I work in accounting, so this week we’re not just closing the month, or the quarter, but the year. Of course, Radley’s not very good at this “hiatus” business either, so it’s not like you have nothing to read. For the time being, here’s a place for NFL playoff talk. So long as no one says “We play OUR GAME, for 60 MINUTES!” we’ll be fine.

I’m pulling for a Packer win over the Vikings this sunday. That would be the third victory over the Vikings this year. The Pack isn’t that good, but one more win over the Vikings would make my day. I could care less about the rest of the teams.

If the skins can beat Minn, so can GB. Think about it.

    My picks for the weekend:

    Colts
    Packers
    Rams
Chargers- This is the only game I have some doubts about. Should be a good one.

I’m starting to suspect that your “Philadelphia wins the Super Bowl” theory won’t come off quite the way you predicted it.

Given the quality of their teams and the lack of quality of their opponents’, all the Pack and Colts have to do this week is show up.

The best game this week will be Jets-Chargers. Two teams that execute well and have played fairly well of late. Ultimately, homefield and a clearly hurting Pennington gives the Chargers my nod.

Rams-Seahawks? On the one hand, the Hawks are clearly entering the realm of “property” of the Rams after their 2 regular season games. And don’t think the first one won’t be in their heads if it’s tight in the fourth. On the other hand, even allowing for the fact that Holmgren clearly isn’t the genius that he was hailed as in GB, I’m still extremely uncomfortable picking Mike Martz to outsmart ANYBODY three consecutive times. When in doubt, pick the team with more of the Holt brothers on it. Rams. I guess.

I know this is a playoff thread and a 49er fan has no business here this year but . . .

I must say that I am not sad at all to see Dennis Erickson and Terry Donahue getting booted. What I am sad about is that John York still owns the team. I fear that as long as he owns the team, we will be doomed.

On a positive note, Romeo Crennel is scheduled to interview for the position.

    We’ll see.

To all of you fans who have teams in the playoffs, may your team play their game for 60 minutes.

    Heh.

The Rams WILL NOT beat the Seahawks again. Mike Martz is one of the worst coaches in the NFL, plus Faulk vs. Alexander, Alexander wins hands down. Also, weather here in the Great Northwest is pretty nasty right now, and the Rams are a different team when out of their pussy dome. And, I will be at the game, bundled up with a few beers in me. :)

Don’t you mean Jackson vs. Alexander?

  9. #9 |  Richard |

Yeah, I know, Jackson the up and comer. Alexander still wins though.

Danno- I think it’s funny the 9ers hired Erikson in the first place! Didn’t anyone down there see what he did with my Seahawks?

I will actually take the Broncos upsetting the Colts this weekend. I know nobody else agrees and the Broncos are something like 80:1 to win the Superbowl, but I think that Dungy sitting his starters last week against the team that they knew they would play with a loss was a bad idea.

The only things that have held the Broncos back this season has been turnovers and their red zone offense. The Broncos have an average defense to play against this week, which with a supreme O-Line like they have is dangerous. Couple that with the fact that Champ and John Lynch (probably the hardest hitting pair of defensive backs playing for the same team in football) will be matched up against Harrison and Wayne. Add on that Dungy doesn’t perform well in the postseason, and I say you’ve got a Bronco win.

    My other picks are easy:
    Pack over Vikes
    Rams over Hawks
    Chargers over Jets

Avis, have you watched any football this year, the Broncos are terrible on the road. They are pretty much terrible everywhere unless they play some deadbeat team. Indy will smack them like they did last year, thus making the Broncos their little bitches.

As for the Sea/Stl and Pack/Minn game, who cares, they will each be out of it next week. Talk about mediocre teams. Sea should win the game but they will probably allow a back door cover like they have about half a dozen times this year.

So does this lastest showing by Brett Favre take away his diety status among sports writers?

These are fun to read after the games.

Danno- I think it’s funny the 9ers hired Erikson in the first place! Didn’t anyone down there see what he did with my Seahawks?

Of course you think it’s funny. He’s not coaching for you any more!= ;)

I didn’t think it was funny at all when his hiring was announced two years ago. It showed me the lack of commitment to the 49ers organization the Yorks have. That and their complete lack of football knowledge.

    (sigh)

I remember when we used to be in the playoffs.

    Enjoy, folks. I can’t.

    Retrospectively:

    Oops.

    Predictively:

Has it occurred to anyone else that the Rams, when they play their best ball, probably can beat anyone in the sad, sad NFC this year? Of course, getting 3 consecutive strong performances out of this inconsistent, underachieving team is VERY unlikely. I’m just saying that if they’re running on all cylinders, who in the NFC is going to stop them?

Mike Martz is an a-hole, but I agree with you Legate Broca, I don’t see the Eagles getting there. I think there’s a decent chance the 2 8-8 teams will meet up in the NFC Championship. That’d be a hoot.
