So now we know: The Bush campaign accuses the Kerry campaign of politicizing the latest bin Laden tape, all the while thinking of it as a “gift.” I realize that politics is politics, but the Bush camp has brought us to a new low. In a recent interview with the New York Daily News, a senior GOP strategist is quoted as saying, “Anything that makes people nervous about their personal safety helps Bush.” He also called it “a little gift,” saying it helps the President but doesn’t guarantee his reelection. Meanwhile, the President continues to harangue Senator Kerry for being weak on defense and the war on terror. Who is really weak here? We gave Mr. Bush his chance to catch bin Laden – three years, in fact – though he stated he wasn’t really worried about him, didn’t think about him too much. If Mr. Bush had spent at least some time worrying about Osama bin Laden, maybe he wouldn’t be taunting us on our TV screens to this day.

Douglas Lorenz-thank you for feeling the way that every libertarian should feel. Voting for the lesser of the 2 evils is nothing more than throwing blind support…it may be blind, but it’s still support none the less. NOFX used to be a fave of mine until I read a web site by the lead singer saying during the last election that it was too important to waste a vote on a 3rd party candidate. Vote for Bush, and no matter what you say, you’re just as bad as all of those that actually support him. The same goes for John Kerry. I’d love to see the day when only 25% of the population votes. It’s a lot easier to question the legitimacy and support a candidate will have if they win.

Maybe it just struck me wrong, but, at a point in the SP Episode, it seemed like the writers were trying to say assert that, while Giant Douche and Turd Sandwich are bad candidates, we’re probably always going to be stuck with them, so you might as well suck it up and vote. They had me up until that point. They could have taken it a touch further and noted that that mindset is a self-fulfilling prophecy, and as long as people believe that Douche & Turd are our only choices, then it will always be so. Oh well.

That South Park episode last night was great… It completely summed up two major problems that we have in today’s electoral politics and appropriately riduculed them.

First, voting for the lesser of two evils is not an appealing option. Whether you punch your ballot next week for the Douche Bag or the Turd Sandwich, I don’t know too many people who aren’t wishing for a viable third choice…

Secondly, why the hell are we pushing people to vote who have no desire to be part of the process? A low voter turnout is a statement of the disgust over the poor choices available.

Here in California two years ago we had just about the lowest voter turnout in history as Gray Davis was barely reelected. The low voter turnout was an indicator that very few people actually wanted to vote for Davis, and it made recalling him a lot easier. The low turnout helped to make the process work.

from this side of the pond it looks like you’ve got a choice of either Lurch or one of the Muppets..

i’m all for the abolition of party politics, the whole spectacle has become too tribal, it doesn’t put democracy in a good light (if we can call this democracy) and religion is getting tainted by association with this crass affair…

i wish i could say democracy was in better shape over here, but i fear the only difference when we get our day at the polling station will be the amount of money involved..

it is a little odd othat even 3rd parties with no hope of winning can’t seem to nominate someone who doesn’t completely blow, tho. as much as its hip to blame the nominating structure of the major parties, maybe in this modern pomo world we’re all douchebags, and we get the candidates we deserve.
