Thursday, September 23rd, 2004After a flury of polls this week, the electoral map stands at Bush 273, Kerry 255. You have to think that the poll putting Maryland at a tie is an anomaly. That means it’s likely Bush 273, Kerry 265. Several states in both candidates’ columns are within the margin of error, but let’s assume those numbers hold.
Back to Colorado. Defying my earlier prediction, it seems that the propspect of Colorado voters passing the proporttional electoral vote allocation measure and voting majority-Bush is not only possible, but likely. Latest polls show it passing by twelve points. At the same time, most polls show a small Bush lead (one shows a big Bush lead, one shows a small Kerry lead).
If Bush squeaks by in Colorado, and the measure passes, the state’s electoral votes would likely go 5-4, Bush.
And that puts us right back at a 269-269 tie.
That means massive recounts in close states across the country. It means court challenges, both to recount procedures and to the Colorado ballot measure. And if we do get a tie, it means we’ll see recounts and court cases across the country in close house and senate races. Every seat in Congress will become important to selecting the president. If the Democrats retake the senate, it also means we could have a Bush-Edwards administration.
It also means lots of entertainment for us political junkies.
I believe this (election confusion) is one of the main reasons that the founding fathers established this nation as a republic and NOT as a democracy. The electoral college and states voting as a block are part of the checks and balances that define us as a republic. Colorados proportional electoral vote would negate this well thought out system.
To carry this idea further we could just convert completely to a democracy and eliminate the 3 branches of government and have the populace vote on every issue. I know, reducto absurdum (or something like that).
I don’t see states voting as a block being the idea the FF had in mind… but Colorado is doing it wrong – they should do it like Maine (1 elector selected per congressional district + 2 electors selected on the statewide vote.)
If they’re going to suck the lifeblood out of the economy, the least thing they can do is be entertaining.

As for this idiotic campaign and the stupid polls, isn’t this a little too much like fantasy football? Jesus, let’s get serious here. It doesn’t matter which socialist welfare/warfare statist pig wins-they are both the sworn enemy of liberty.

I think the worst possible thing that could happen with this election is to draw it out.
Get it over with, please. Then we can talk about something else, instead of pretending that one statist is slightly better than the other, and it really makes a difference which one wins.
