High Tax Zone

I was driving through the Rockville-Chevy Chase area of Maryland yesterday and noticed a smattering of political signs in the high-income areas that said “High Tax Zone.” I’m not familiar with the current political landscape of the area, so I can only guess that the signs are related to some tax issue that will be on the ballot this November.

Thing is, all of the signs were stuck in the lavishly landscaped lawns of multimillion dollar homes.

This blog has made the point many, many times that the rich pay well more than their fare share of taxes, and that in fact low-income folks ought pay more (or any, as the case may be), at least so that we all feel the pinch each time Congress proposes a massive new entitlement. And so we don’t end up with a scenario where 80% of the non-tax paying voting public are voting for programs paid for by the 20% who do pay income tax.

That’s why I say this as an ally, and for wealthy suburban Marylanders’ own good: Those signs are oboxious. It’s hard to win sympathy for an anti-tax initiative when the signs supporting it are stuck in the yards of suburban mansions. I understand, and sympathize. But I’d guess that most people who take Connecticut Avenue through Chevy Chase won’t.
