At lower levels of income, people trade environmental quality for economic growth - preservation of self is the primary goal, not the preservation of nature. But that situation can change quickly. In general, the annual income level at which the demand for environmental quality appears is between $4,000 and $8,000. The demand for water quality comes at even lower levels. Similar relationships exist for the preservation of endangered species and even the relatively obscure concern over carbon emissions.Moreover, the point at which the demand appears trends downward as new environment-enriching technologies appear. Wealthy countries export the technology to poorer ones, who can simply acquire what they need to improve the quality of, say, water or air, at lower levels of income.
It’s important to get developing countries to that “green ceiling” as quickly as possible, even if that means short-term ecological hardship (though even that needn’t be as potent nor as lasting as the ecological growing pains the west expereienced — technology can bring the developing world thorugh them much more quickly, and at less cost).

I mean, how do you convince an individual who is into worshiping rocks and lumber to stop setting cars on fire?
This has everything to do with large scale vs small scale, in relation to short term vs long term vision. As immediate, biological, individual self-preservation looms closer, the larger scale, big-picture, long-term vision is obscured.

The eco-fundies driving force is rooted in destruction, or, in other words, that this is a zero-sum game, and, in order to protect the environment, humans must lower their quality of life. They don’t see it any other way, and consumerism/consumption is the enemy. it is human regression that they are after, not a plausible solution that works hand-in-hand with capitalism.
