Delmore Schwartz

In relaying what’s on his summer reading list, NRO’s Rick Brookhiser points to this biography of author and poet Delmore Schwartz. Schwartz’s “In Dreams Begin Responsibilities” is one of my all-time favorite short stories.

I just bought a used version of the biography for ninety-five cents, via Amazon’s wonderful “marketplace.”

Bit of trivia about Schwartz: While an English professor at Syracuse, Schwartz befriended and mentored a young Lou Reed. Reed’s tune “My House” is an homage to Schwartz, though a weird one. The song tells of Reed conjuring Schwartz’s spirit through a Ouija board.

Delmore Schwartz was also the inspiration for “Humboldt’ Gift” by Saul Bellow.
