Your Skills Here
Thursday, July 15th, 2004So I’m considering a site redesign.
I’m not dead set on the idea. But change might be good.
Here’s the thing: I’m cheap. And I do generally still like what we have now. I’m just open to new ideas.
So if any of you with design skills want to try to redesign the pages you’re looking at, please feel free to have a whack at a demo, and send it to me. I probably won’t pay you (although if you send me something spectacular, I’d consider it). And I reserve the right to not like your hard work.
But if I do like it, I can give you or your firm prominent placement on the site for the next couple of years (or until the next redesign).
I’d like to keep the logo, or at least the general concept the logo conveys. And I like white space. And I need space for ads.
If you’re still interested given all of those ridiculously restrictive caveats, let me know.

I hate change, except in the case of underwear.
That’s a sure sign of insecurity Frank. I’m open to changing just about anything, except my underwear.
Radley, the site looks good to me already. Your conservatism is well placed on this issue.
I wouldn’t change too much Radley. The only user interface thing you might consider changing are all the links on the left hand side. Seems like there are way too many. I would break them up into separate pages. I would also put your ads on the right hand side separate from your content links. All of the is just a matter of juggling some HTML code around.
Well I make web apps for a living Radley, but a) I wouldn’t work for free (already spent over a week on an app for my church - $0) and b) I think your site works fine the way it is. Since you’re not ’selling’ anything, I’d say keep it like it is.
The only thing that sort of bugs me is the blue bar on the right that ‘enforces’ the width of the pages. I always prefer web pages that scale so I can have a small window or maximize it and see everything. This would be especially nice for the comments window since I run 1152×864 and wouldn’t have to scroll so much to read comments.
Your site looks good as it is. Its very uncluttersome (is that even a word??)
I vote little or no change. The site is uncluttered, yet not boring.
Whatever you do, however, don’t let the people who redesigned Foxnews.com get anywhere near your site.
I’ve been meaning to create a favicon.ico for this site and email it to you for some time now. But alas, I can’t seem to get around to it, plus I’m really not all that graphically talented. I just hate that my bookmark for this site doesn’t have its own nifty icon…
Noooo! I hate change!
Wait a minute — no I don’t.
With that said, I too like the site as is.
I have to aqree with roger … DO NOT let the web designer of foxnews.com (or drudgereport.com for that matter) anywhere near this site
I have to agree with the comments asking you not to change. But if you do PLEASE listen to James D and Roger and not allow anyone who designed Foxnews.com near your site. I only go there now when you link to a piece you’ve written
You’re trying to find a libertarian who will work for free?
expecting free stuff from someone elses hard work.
yet another sign of your true colors radley.
liberal democrat.
Yeah, why would someone work for free for Radley? I mean its not like he would give a fledling designer exposure to 4000+ visitors or help them get a job at Cato after designing a logo….
Exactly, Frank. Total waste of time.
*eye roll*
value of advertisement = $ 85 (radley’s going rate) * 12 months * 2 years = $ 2,040.
now i dont know much about web sight design, but IF you can do it for less than $ 2,040 and IF radley picks your site and IF he does not offer same “deal” in one year for a new site design (and thus decreasing the value - see above formula) then by all means knock yourself out.
Ooohh live in DC?! No thanks
Really, I don’t think you should change it much (if at all) and if you really want to then I would try some ‘fledging’ designer. I design more ‘functional’ web applications verses ‘eye-catching’ web sites anyways (yes there is a big distinction). You could do better than me
I will be happy to offer tips/suggestions though.
I know this is off-topic but whenever I submit a link to Radley it nevers gets mentioned anyways, so I found this today and thought it was very funny (it’s a short Flash movie - very ‘South Park’ looking too):

Whatever you do, just make sure that it loads fast. There are a lot of blogs out there to be read daily.
Site design sucks and needs to be re-done. Luckily, the content makes up for the shitty site.
