We all learned a few weeks back during a discussion of obesity, that “the era of personal responsiblity is over”
(A quote from the group pushing anti-obesity legislation).

I say, “Ban ‘em!” And while we’re at it, let’s go after Sharp Objects! Now there’s a threat. You could poke your eye out, for God’s sake! If we are diligent in our efforts banning all dangerous and potentially dangerous products, we won’t have to deal with that pesky “personal responsibility” stuff so soon.

Yeah, in Virginia, you have to have some special permit (usually only obtainable by folks who are staging a big 4th of july fireworks display), in order to possess fireworks that are airborne, and/or other “dangerous” fireworks. These days, you can go to one of the roadside displays or the ones set up in 7-11′s, and you’ll see a whole slough of the fountains, but pretty much everything else is outlawed. I even think those little black snake things are illegal.

But there is a thriving black market here, and if you know the right people, or if you wanna drive ‘cross the border, well…

Gotta love the commonwealth. Like our 25 new draconian DWI laws. yeeehaw! First offenders get a mandatory prison stay!

I think they have this in australia, certainly they do in WA, and they compensated for it by having huge organised displays at each and every opportunity, especially on australia day.

In areas where there is no such risk, i see no reason to restrict peoples inalienable right to perforate each others ear drums…

“Let’s ban it” should be the new motto of this godforsaken country. We need some REAL fuckin hard times in this country. Another depression. Something, anything to occupy the minds of the fucking bored nanny-statists. Yeah, maybe then, they’ll realize that there’s more important things to worry about than banning sparklers.

I mean, you can look at Virginia to see what fireworks prohibition does. It forces people to go “underground”, out of state, etc. And it adds a mystique to fireworks for kids, just like guns. And so, instead of using them under adult supervision, they go off in the woods or something, and risk further injury. Plus, you effectively squash any attempts at educating the public about how to use fireworks safely, because, how do you justify educating people ehow to safely use an illegal item?

But, they opened the door for this long ago, when they outlawed aerial fireworks. I mean, I dunno about many other states, but here in VA, the only thing you can get are those fucking fountains. Whoopee.
