Yeah, get this - I'm stuck with a statewide ban on the use of grills on apartment balconies... this includes gas and charcoal based grills....

::quote::Under the new rules, "no hibachi, gas-fired grill, charcoal grill or other similar devices used for cooking, heating or any other purpose shall be used or kindled on any balcony or under any overhanging portion or within 10 feet of any structure.::endquote::

I swear to god, if we continue on this path...... well, I guess it doesn't matter because we'll all be forced to wear padded, fire resistant/retardant, impact resistant suits with built in air bags. Mouthgards will be mandatory when walking or driving, pedestrian helmet laws will be introduced, we'll have to start wearing scented, gas-trapping, tampon-like devices up our asses to help reduce the noxious gas emissions...

I'm considering dragging my grill down the 3 flights of stairs, setting it out in the middle of the street and having a huge (and legal) barbeque... oh, and set off my unused fireworks.

I wish I could even get fountains in Illinois. Smoke bombs and sparklers are just about the most you can get. That doesn't mean I didn't fire off $500 worth of mortars and fountains and a 30ft long strand of firecrackers that last for 10 minutes straight. Indiana only takes about an hour to get to. I was able pick up a carton of smokes for $10 cheaper too.

I think the only thing that should be banned is banning things. Everything that needs banned at this point is already banned. The word 'ban' can be officially retired now.

Besides, the more we ban things, the more the process of natural selection is hampered as a tried and proven method of bettering our species. The more we 'ban' things the dumber we get as a society. Stupidity Cleansing is vital to human survival and dominance of this planet. Statistically, if our average IQ drops just two more points we will be replaced by the Dolphin as most intelligent animal.

Okay, I made up that last part but I wonder sometimes if we have broadened the gap over the last few thousand years or fallen back towards the pack in the smarts category...

Sorry for being late. Did the comments during the obesity blog contain really funny stuff about deer hunting and poking your eye out too?

David,

You are a little late to this blog.

We all learned a few weeks back during a discussion of obesity, that "the era of personal responsiblity is over"
(A quote from the group pushing anti-obesity legislation).

This discussion has gone off course. Fireworks don't just light themselves- matches and lighters do. They are also used to light cigarettes that also cause untold misery to society. There are few legitimate other uses for matches and lighters. They are not any good for hunting deer either.

I say, "Ban 'em!" And while we're at it, let's go after Sharp Objects! Now there's a threat. You could poke your eye out, for God's sake! If we are diligent in our efforts banning all dangerous and potentially dangerous products, we won't have to deal with that pesky "personal responsibility" stuff so soon.

We have the same ban here in San Diego county (and a few others here). It's a blanket ban. It's needed. see my posting on Reason's Hit and Run about this issue.

Wade:

Yeah, in Virginia, you have to have some special permit (usually only obtainable by folks who are staging a big 4th of july fireworks display), in order to possess fireworks that are airborne, and/or other "dangerous" fireworks. These days, you can go to one of the roadside displays or the ones set up in 7-11's, and you'll see a whole slough of the fountains, but pretty much everything else is outlawed. I even think those little black snake things are illegal.

But there is a thriving black market here, and if you know the right people, or if you wanna drive 'cross the border, well...

Gotta love the commonwealth. Like our 25 new draconian DWI laws. yeeehaw! First offenders get a mandatory prison stay!

Blue Springs, Missouri (yes, the same place that conned the feds out of a quarter million to study 'goth culture') has some of the most draconian ordinances regarding fireworks: Only sixteen pre-approved (by the city) non-profit groups are allowed to sell fireworks in the city limits; only those fireworks purchased from said groups are allowed to be discharged in the city limits (save those receipts!!); fireworks can only be used from 8am to midnight, and only on July 1, 2, 3 and 4; fireworks must cease from being discharged precisely at midnight, July 4th, and; fireworks can only be discharged in specified areas of city parks (generally asphalt slabs the size of a Walmart parking lot).

Let freedom ring, Blue Springs, let freedom ring!!!

Wade, I believe traditional burn bans during dry seasons would suffice for your concern. There is no need to enact new and draconian prohibitions.

I think Evan was refering to Virginia. Here in Florida you can now get everything from firecrackers, and bottle rockets, to mortar shells that produce those scaled down proffesional looking bursts. Really fun to shoot off too. (Except for the scorched fingers from lighting those big fuses)

Happy 4th, and to all, have a safe and happy weekend.

whoa, just a minute. I just read evans post...... aerial fireworks are already banned??

what sort of fireworks are you allowed then, underwater ones? Surely it's essential to the act of combustion that air is involved???

A blanket ban would make sense in areas that are so dry that using fireworks will inevitably lead to wild fires.

I think they have this in australia, certainly they do in WA, and they compensated for it by having huge organised displays at each and every opportunity, especially on australia day.

In areas where there is no such risk, i see no reason to restrict peoples inalienable right to perforate each others ear drums...

Jesus fucking christ (yeah, so, I just watched Winnebago man).

"Let's ban it" should be the new motto of this godforsaken country. We need some REAL fuckin hard times in this country. Another depression. Something, anything to occupy the minds of the fucking bored nanny-statists. Yeah, maybe then, they'll realize that there's more important things to worry about than banning sparklers.

I mean, you can look at Virginia to see what fireworks prohibition does. It forces people to go "underground", out of state, etc. And it adds a mystique to fireworks for kids, just like guns. And so, instead of using them under adult supervision, they go off in the woods or something, and risk further injury. Plus, you effectively squash any attempts at educating the public about how to use fireworks safely, because, how do you justify educating people ehow to safely use an illegal item?

But, they opened the door for this long ago, when they outlawed aerial fireworks. I mean, I dunno about many other states, but here in VA, the only thing you can get are those fucking fountains. Whoopee.

BAN THIS! BAN THAT! Fuck off. Go do something useful.
