Stuff I Like

1) Six Feet Under. The first two episodes have been less than great, but how funny was the opening vignette this week? With the woman mistaking helium-filled sex dolls for the rapture?

2) Hank Williams. Caught the PBS bio-documentary on him tonight.

3) “Portland, Oregon.” The second track on Loretta Lynn’s new album is a duet between her and Jack White, who also produces the CD. It’s darned swell.

4) Comedy Central. Puts out great comedy like HBO puts out great drama. I remember when CC was all Saturday Night Live reruns and bad stand-up bits. Now? You have stalwarts South Park, The Daily Show, and Chapelle’s Show. Plus the very, very funny Reno 911. I just caught the first episode of Straight Plan for the Gay Man. Laughed out loud. Several times. Also, Trigger Happy TV, Conan replays, and Primetime Glick. Now, if we can just get them to stop with the MAD TV reruns. That show was never funny.

The brilliant opening segment of Monday’s Daily Show where they caught Cheney lying about Iraq locked up their next Emmy. Stewart and company are smarter and more honest than Michael Moore, with a fraction of his resources.

Chapelle’s show has been a surprise. When I first saw it, it stunk. It looked like, ah, just another “white people are like THIS, but black people are like THAT” schtick. But months later, I turned it on again, and he had me rollin. The bit with the playground and all the puppets? Oh christ, everytime I think about that Oscar-the-Grouch ripoff singing “Fuckit, Fuckit, Fuckit”, I laugh again. And the bit with Wayne Brady, priceless!

You don’t suppose this is because HBO owns half of Comedy Central, do you? =P

As for Chapelle Show, my personal fav was the fake ‘Frontline’ bit with the blind black guy who was a white supremacist.

Please wax rhapsodic about the Hank Williams show…

The wife and I refuse to watch PBS because we consider the organization a den of traitors, but I’d love to hear about Hank.

Agreed. Reno, Chapelle, and SP are hysterical, and Mad TV powerfully sucks.

Comedy Central was also responsible for putting the VERY funny Upright Citizen’s Brigade on TV for a brief, shinning moment…

(waxes nostalgic and thanks God for DVDs)

Upright Citizen’s Brigade was hilarious!! I still can’t take a penny from a cashier without thinking about that show (and if you don’t know what I’m talking about, consider yourself lucky)…

Y’know, Radley, I must disagree with you about the subpar episodes. While the second was merely average, I thought Nate’s continuing struggle (and especially his final scene) was perfectly executed and directed.

Oh, and the symmetry of the opening death and the closing, of course.
