Tuesday, May 25th, 20041) Christian Exodus is to evangelicals what the Free State Project is to libertarians. Or that’s at least what they’re aiming for. The goal is to find 50,000 politically minded folks who love the Baby Jesus, and are fed up with the likes of gay marriage and Janet Jackson. The lot of them will then move to Mississippi or Alabama and promptly secede from the rest of us.

Heh. These guys make the FSP look like it might actually work. I don’t believe secession is a goal of the FSP.
If there’s 50,000 people actually willing to cut themselves off from the rest of the country over gay marriage (this seems to be their focal issue), I’d be willing to help them move.
Seriously. I have a truck and I can lift a lot. Just name the day.
So the nut-job Christians were right- Gay marriage will cause a breakdown of our country……. If THEY cause it.
This is just a little scary because it might work. Can you really see the US getting into another civil war?
Christian Exodus is to evangelicals what the Free State Project is to libertarians? You mean something to keep their most committed adherents busy with a pointless diversion and false hope instead of actively working for change in their own communities? OK, I hope every evangilical with time on their hands gets involved.
Oh thank god, and I thought we were going to have to break up with them. The be completely honest, I sometimes wish the south had won the civil war so I did not have to share a country with those people.
Those people?
This could be perilous. Can you imagine a bunch of christians (who don’t always or ever agree with each other) living together in supposed peace and harmony?
They would end up confirming what people already thing about them. And I AM one of them.
think, not thing
Wow! If we had only known that just having gay marriage in one state would be all it takes to get these assholes to leave!
My thoughts exactly Don, I say if they wanna leave, let em go.
Ms. Dani — this reminds me of Walter Williams’ idea of Texiana — taking Texas and Louisiana and forming a new nation, for those who want to stop subisidizing the dependency culture in today’s America.
And, we’d be glad to take those pesky documents — the Declaration of Independence and Constitution, as written — off their hands.
After all, since so many of those left in Old America have no use for a Creator, the first document has lost at least some relevance for them.
As for the second document, they have already shown such an aptitude for creative writing when it comes to applying the Constitution, that I am sure they can come up with something that is “better” in their eyes.
Don K and T, and what exactly makes a christian an automatic asshole? Taking a stand makes one an asshole? I don’t get it. Sounds like you’re the as….. nevermind.
They can have Alabama and Mississippi.
Yeah this is wonderful plan…just as long as they take Ashcroft with them.
Seems like there’s a lot of migrating these days - Virginia just passed an amendment (if you believe the CNN story) that is so anti-gay that gay people have decided to start leaving in droves.
Virginia is for hetero-lovers.
Well… I am sorry for letting my language get a little… uh… pungent. I don’t like to use name calling instead of arguments.
On the other hand, these are the folks who would like to see me rot in prison for an extended period (15 years under the old Michigan law that was never repealed) for something that’s none of the state’s business, so yes I would be happy to see as many as possible relocate somewhere they’re out of my business.
Sounds like a plan. Let local governments govern their constituents and get the feds out of micromanaging our lives from afar.
I predict there will be a (nonviolent?) civil war within the next 100 years. The cultural divide between the Left/East Coasts and the Midwest/South is so apparent. We would ALL be better represented with two separate but equal nations.
I wish the South has won the first civil war. Why did the North care so much to retain the South they despised? From what I understand, the North was just pissed that the South had cheap/free labor. War is ALWAYS economic.
How do you know that “those folks” in particular want to see you rot in prison? Do all christians want to see you rot in prison? The answer has to be no because I am a christian and I don’t want to see you rot. And doesn’t the fact that you place all christians into the category of “those folks” make you in fact a bigot?
Sorry. I’m a little irked by the language used here in this section. The commentors on this blog usually stay away from language that refers to people as “those” and “them”. It’s just rude and not good for debate. (Hey Rich, I guess today I’m the blog-Nanny):)
swamp justice, re: northern and southern mentalities/thought patterns in the late 1800s, abraham lincoln had this to say, “if slavery did not now exist among them, they would not introduce it.” and a parallel he drew for the north “if it did exist amongst us, we should not instantly give it up.” i have no idea what lincoln would say about gays and janet jackson though. michelle
seccession is a ridiculous proposal, but the idea of moving to one state to govern as you wish is not. it’s funny, though, when libertarians do this it’s the greatest idea ever, but when someone else does it, they are mocked and called names - along with everyone who lives in the proposed area who may or may not agree. lovely. very libertarian of y’all.
i’m sure that everyone in new hampshire wants babies to starve. those stupid, selfish yankees.
Ms. Dani -
Don’t sweat it. You’ll never meet a bigger bigot than one of the vocal anti-Christians. The problem is, they don’t recognize it as bigotry, since Christians have always been fair game for irrational attacks.
Oh well, I suppose it’s always been that way - “assholes”, “those people”, “nut-jobs”, etc… Sometimes it really is hard to turn the other cheek, though. Therein lies the challenge.
Rich -
Couldn’t agree with you more.
Ms. Dani -
I believe you when you say you don’t want to send me off to the big house. I even believe the majority of Christians have a live-and-let-live attitude about these kinds of things. There is, however (I hope you’ll agree), a portion of Christians (not sure how large or small, but this portion seems to have a disproportionate influence on the Republican Party these days, at least in Michigan) who are hateful in their fixation on the subject of homosexuality and their desire to have the state stamp it out, and I don’t think it’s bigoted to say that. I don’t expect everybody to approve of what I do in the privacy of my house, but I do expect tolerance, and if some of those who are intolerant choose to relocate, well, more power to them.
Don K -
Why exactly do you feel that I want you to rot in prison for 15 years? What horrible thing(s) did you do, and how do you know my feelings on the topic?
Don K, I do agree that there is a section, as in every ideological group, that takes things to the extreme. They are the ones who give the rest of the group a bad name.
So my unsolicited suggestion to you is that you should find out if these folks are of that kind or not. Just because they choose to move into/create a state that recognizes their morals/standards for living doesn’t make them haters and assholes. I prefer to call them preservationists.
roger, (booty bumping)
>>I don’t expect everybody to approve of what I do in the privacy of my house, but I do expect tolerance…
Me, too, Don, but these guy-gals don’t want that at all. They want to parade their sexual behavior in my street, advocate it from my pulpit, promote it to my grammar-school children, and DEMAND not just passive tolerance, but active “with-the-full-faith-and-confidence” legal authorization. This is as far from “tolerance” as a campfire is from a forest fire.
It’s bad enough to have people considering moving to Mississippi, for cryin’ out loud!
Yeah this is wonderful plan…just as long as they take Ashcroft with them.
Andrew,
Of COURSE Ashcroft is going; he’s gonna be the first Emporer of the Christian utopia. You know, the one where everyone gets along because they all believe in the same things…
I forget, is it the body and blood of Christ, or does it become the body and blood of Christ? Better get that all worked out before packing the moving vans…
Let me see. I believe this has already been done a long time ago. On the large scale you have Utah. But alas. If you don’t have enough people you just end up with another Waco. Boy wasn’t that fun.
Let’s see Christians want thier own state to live according to thier beliefs and they’re idiots and nut jobs, but Libertarians want to take over a state and they’re well reasoned principled people. Just wanted to make sure I understood.
No Christian bashing by me, yet I’d like to see the hard-core bible thumpers and extremists of every group just go away…wait a minute..I’m an exremist libertarian…maybe I should move to New Hampshire and away from the rest of you normal people.
normal is relative
if our government operated by only the principles outlined in the constitution and the bill of rights, this would never have happened.
of course, if woody had gone to the police none of this would have happened. dating myself, most likely…
Ms. Dani,
unless you’re speaking of MY relatives…
I have no problem with Christians… I have considerable problems with people who wish to take their own religious beliefs and implement them as public law. In the process, the theocrats end up giving a bad name to all people who hold religious beliefs.
At least the Christian Exodus people are honest. They make it clear that their goal is to take over a state and rescind the U.S. Constitution. Most of the theonazis try to claim that what they are doing is supported by the Constitution…
Nah, some members of the Free State Project are wackos, too, on some level. Every group has its own David Koresh/Randy Weaver types that make the status quo wonder just what ‘those people’ are thinking. And their extremist isolationist behaviors don’t help with their PR campaigns, either.
For me, it just seems more conceivable to change a state’s political makeup over time (i.e. Vermont) than to impose some religious dogma on people who have enjoyed 215+ years of religious freedom (or freedom FROM religion). I’m all for people worshipping their particular deity as often as necessary, so long as they don’t expect me to do the same. The problem is, a lot of evangelicals apparently don’t have the same laissez-faire, “live and let live” attitude that I have about my neighbors, and could make it ‘uncomfortable’ even for those Christians who don’t read the exact same Bible that they read every Sunday (i.e. Northern Ireland’s ‘Orange’ and ‘Green’ people).
It’s tempting to think that a place like Alabama is essentially 100% Southern Baptist, so it would be no problem for the evangelicals to set up shop down there in a matter of months, but the truth is a little more complex. Jews, Muslims, Catholics and Jehovah’s Witnesses are all represented in most larger Alabama towns’ phone books, just like everywhere else in the country - even Salt Lake City! While I can’t presume to speak for the people who practice other faiths in places like Alabama, I do know that if I was suddenly surrounded by tens of thousands of the “born-again”, all of whom actively wanted to gang-save me, I would feel a little creeped out by the whole thing. Right now, the premise of religious freedom abates that somewhat; but if the state suddenly decides to secede on religious grounds, all bets are off. And no, I don’t believe that the Evangelical State of Holy Alabama would force Jews, Catholics, Muslims, and Jehovah’s Witnesses to live in ghettos, but I would not rule out the possibility that Birmingham would start feeling more like Belfast in no time.
roger,
the only thing that is ok to be intolerant of is intolerance and I find the beliefs that define the Christian right as being based on intolerance and inconsistent with the ideas of this country.
Ms Dani,
Iâm not sure how a pronoun can be offensive. Sounds like the episode of the Chappelle Show where they make fun of the real world.
I say let them secede…then we nuke ‘em….when Hannity is on a book tour in Montgomery.

Government should not be involved in marriage. It cost taxpayers 30 billion in 2002 on heterosexual divorce which gay couples do less. I say government should get out entirely and we christians like myself should live by our faith/principles and be good examples. They want to succeed from the country, tear it down which makes me sick what next civil war the sequel? The free state project unlike this project is respectable, I can’t move to NH but would like to in the mean time there is a similar group based in:idaho, montana and wyoming I belong to I moved to idaho almost ten years ago, its getting more and more oppressive and statist every day. They banned smoking, increased seat belt laws and are trying to ban gay marruage I’m saddened.
